MGB Regional Office No. 1 geologists namely Mr. Socrates G. Gaerlan (Chief Geologist), Ms. Vilma A. Vecino (Supervising Geologist), Mr. Jose D. Lignes Jr. (Supervising Geologist), Mr. Riddick B. Bombase (Geologist II), and Ms. Marie Rose B. Aguda (Contractual Geologist), attended the annual Geoscience Workshop held last January 16 – 21, 2017 at the Lima Park Hotel in Malvar, Batangas.
In compliance to the main provisions of Republic Act No. 9003, otherwise known as Ecological Solid Wastes Management Act of 2000, the Local Government of Laoag, Province of Ilocos Norte through the Hon. Mayor Chevylle V. Fariñas, requested the Mines and Geosciences Bureau personnel to conduct the geological assessment on the proposed sanitary landfill located at the Barangay Lagui-Sail, City of Laoag, Province of Ilocos Norte.
In response to the request letter of DENR Region 1 for technical assistance in the conduct of geological survey and water quality assessment of the Alaminos River, Alaminos City, Pangasinan and Baruyen River in the municipalities of Burgos and Bangui, Ilocos Norte, the survey was conducted on September 26-30, 2016 and October 3-7, 2016, respectively. The field party composed of the Contractual Geologist Ms. Mariel B. Tuonan of Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region 1 and Ms. Marilyn M. Racoma, Senior Ecosystem Management Specialist, Conservation and Development Division, DENR R1 together with the personnel of CENRO Alaminos City, Pangasinan.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. I, in coordination with Department of Education Region I, conducted the Art Workshop of differently-abled students for three (3) consecutive Saturdays (November 19, 26 and December 3, 2016) held at San Fernando City SPED High School, with the theme “Promoting Environment and Responsible Mining through Arts” which greatly helped in developing the innate talents of the students.
A Training-Workshop on understanding 1:10,000 Scale Geohazard Maps was conducted by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB)-Geology Division at the Palacio De Laoag City, Ilocos Norte in October 18-19, 2016. The MGB together with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG)-Ilocos Norte, have determined to accommodate the officials of the municipalities and cities of the province. Moreover, representatives of each barangays are most encouraged to attend; as they are the direct addressee of the activity.
A team from the Geosciences Division, Mines and Geosciences Bureau- Regional Office I (MGB- ROI) conducted a Vulnerability and Risk Assessment at the thirty (30) barangays in the municipality of Mangaldan and fifty-nine (59) barangays in the City of San Fernando and was undertaken from September 8 to October 3, 2016.
Four geologists of the MGB R01 headed by Mr. Socrates G. Gaerlan (Chief Geologist) together with Ms. Vilma A. Vecino (Supervising Geologist), Mr. Jose D. Lignes (Supervising Geologist), and Ms. Marie Rose B. Aguda (Contractual Geologist) participated in the 2016 Geoscience Workshop held last August 24-29 at Icon Hotel, Timog Ave., Quezon City.
A Training on Disaster Preparedness, Response and Post-Actions to Natural Calamity was held on September 19-23, 2016 at the Philippine National Police Regional Office 1 at Camp Brigadier General Oscar M. Florendo, Parian, San Fernando, La Union. The training hosted by the PNP aims to educate and equip the PNP personnel with skills, knowledge and tools related to disaster risk reduction especially in terms of planning, responding and managing rescue operations.
Five (5) newly appointed and promoted employees of the office pledged commitment to public service during the Oath Taking Ceremony held on September 13, 2016 at the Office of the Regional Director, Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. I, Government Center, City of San Fernando, La Union.

In his text message to Director Carlos A. Tayag of MGB Region I, the Honorable Congressman claimed dump trucks loaded with river aggregates sourced from the Cabugao River in Sitio Rebba, Brgy. Cacadiran, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur had caused damages to the baranagy road. It being used as an access road.
In view of the DENR Administrative Order No. 2015-07 issued by DENR Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje dated April 30, 2015, Mandating Mining Contractors to secure ISO 14001 Certification, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 1 (MGB-1), in coordination with AGF Consulting Group-Philippines, a leading and training ISO-based management systems consulting and training firm in the country and in some parts of South East Asia, initiated an orientation seminar on ISO 14001:2015 Certification last July 20, 2016 at the DENR Bldg. Conference Hall in Sevilla, San Fernando City, La Union.
Personnel of MGB I seized twelve (12) units of ten-wheeler dump trucks believed to be loaded with mineral ores.
The trucks were initially flagged – down by members of the Philippine National Police, Pangasinan Province Police Office – Dasol Municipal Police Station in Brgy. Poblacion, Dasol, Pangasinan on 31 August 2016.
As part of the province wide groundwater assessment project of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 1, a team from the Geosciences Division conducted their hydrological assessment in the Municipalities of Bauang, Caba, and Aringay, Province of La Union last August 1 – 29, 2016.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau-I (MGB-I) participated in the Provincial Planning Workshop on Mainstreaming Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in the Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) held at Hotel Ariana, Bauang La Union on July 29, 2016. The activity spearheaded by the Department of Interior and Local Government aims to orient the participants to have a better understanding on the importance of Climate Disaster Risk Assessment (CDRA) and how it is undertaken and to finalize the requirements needed for the training such as barangay data and other pertinent information as well as the strategies to be employed for identified LGUs along Major River Basins (MRBs).
