In view of the DENR Administrative Order No. 2015-07 issued by DENR Secretary Ramon J.P. Paje dated April 30, 2015, Mandating Mining Contractors to secure ISO 14001 Certification, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office No. 1 (MGB-1), in coordination with AGF Consulting Group-Philippines, a leading and training ISO-based management systems consulting and training firm in the country and in some parts of South East Asia, initiated an orientation seminar on ISO 14001:2015 Certification last July 20, 2016 at the DENR Bldg. Conference Hall in Sevilla, San Fernando City, La Union.

ISO 14001:2015 specifies the requirements for an Environmental Management System (EMS) that an organization can use to enhance its environmental performance. ISO 14001:2015 is intended for use by an organization seeking to manage its environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner that contributes to the environmental pillar of sustainability.

The orientation-seminar was attended by technical personnel of MGB-1, DENR-1, EMB-1 and various mining companies operating in the Region. The aim of the one-day orientation is to encourage all operating mining companies in Region 1 to apply for ISO Certification under the new version to adopt and internalize the valued best practices of international EMS to improve compliance, eliminate environmental health and safety risks and meet customer service requirements towards the achievement of organizational goals and objectives.

The resource speaker Engr. Jong Fernandez stressed the need to create strategies to a successful implementation of a performance management system in order to enhance continuous improvement of mining companies in terms of environmental performance through efficient use of resources, reduction of waste and identification of areas for improvement. He also illustrated the collection of business processes established to manage environmental aspects; fulfilment of compliance obligations; and address of risks & opportunities.
At the end of the orientation, Engr. John C. Ymson (OIC, MSESDD) thanked the AGF Consulting Group-Philippines for the conduct of orientation-seminar and made certain that the Bureau always seeks for improvement in adherence to a consistent quality service and promotion of sustainable environment.
