A Local Climate Change Action Planning Orientation-Workshop was held on March 16-17, 2017 at the Municipal Hall of Santol, La Union. It is in consonance with Republic Act No. 9729 known as the “Climate Change Act of 2009” mainstreaming climate change into government policy formulations, establishing the framework strategy and program on climate change, creating for the purpose of Climate Change Commission and for other purposes. Likewise, as stated in the Section 14 of the said RA ”Local Climate Change Action Plan”, LGUs shall be the frontline agencies in the formulation, planning and implementation of climate change action plans in their respective areas, consistent with the provisions of the Local Government Code, the Framework and the National Climate Change Action Plan.

The activity hosted by the municipality of Santol aims to instill /enhance awareness among the participants about Climate Change; create and solicit support of stakeholders towards addressing climate change and update the Municipality’s Climate Change Action Plan.

About 50 participants consisting of SB Members, Barangay Captains, Non-Government Organizations, line Agencies, MPDO etc. attended the seminar. Among the topics discussed were Climate Change and its Effects, Climate Change Adaptation, CC related Diseases, responses to CC, and RA 9003 otherwise known as the Solid Waste Management Act.

MGB Regional Office No. I represented by Ms. Vilma A. Vecino delivered a lecture on "Understanding Geohazards" and "Geohazard Map Reading" and distributed geohazard IEC materials such as flyers on “BAHA” and “LANDSLIDES” and Geohazard Map of Santol Municipality.

IEC materials such as flyers and hard copy of Geohazard maps were distributed during the Local Climate Change Action Planning Workshop for the Municipality of Santol held on March 16-17, 2017 at their Municipal Hall.

Queries/questions on the topics delivered were entertained during the Open Forum.

Local government Units (LGUs) are required to regularly update their respective climate change action plans and reflect changing social, economic and environmental conditions and emerging issues. The LGUs shall furnish the Commission with copies of their action plans and all subsequent amendments, modifications and revisions thereof, within one (1) month from their adoption and mobilize and allocate necessary personnel, resources and logistics to effectively implement their respective action plans.

The workshop ended with an Open Forum where issues and concerns of the municipality were clarified./VAV
