The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) – Geosciences Division conducted a seminar on the results of its geohazard mapping and assessment. The seminar entitled “Training-Workshop on Understanding 1:10,000 Scale Geohazard Map” was held on March 21-24, 2017 at Seven Wonders Hotel and Theme Park Inc, Baluarte Compound, Salindeg, Vigan City Ilocos Sur.

Participants actively participate in the workshop proper to identify the degree of susceptibility of hazards present in their area.

The activity was attended by delegates coming from 163 Barangays in Ilocos Sur involving local leaders as well as those who are in forefront during times of natural disasters or calamities such as the Barangay Chairman/Chairwoman, Local Chief Executive, Local Government Planners, City/Municipality Disaster and Risk Reduction Officers, Provincial/Municipal Local Government Operations Officer, Provincial/Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office, PNP and Civil Society Representative.

For the month of March 2017, participants came from different municipalities of Ilocos Sur, namely:
1. Vigan City 5. Quirino
2. San Esteban 6. Nagbukel
3. Burgos 7. Narvacan
4. Santa Maria

The purpose of the training-workshop is to equip them with the knowledge, skills and attitude- crucial components in disaster mitigation and management.

Distribution of Maps to different Barangays in Ilocos Sur

These local leaders were briefed on the vulnerability or susceptibility of geohazards present in their area. They were also taught the basics of map reading and more importantly, they were introduced to the basic techniques on how to interpret geohazard maps.
