LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte – With the upcoming opportunities and increasing challenges for the environment sector particularly in the minerals industry, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau held the 18th Regional Mining Summit last May 29-31,2019 at the Java Hotel, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. This year’s theme “Responsible Mining Rising to the challenge of Performing and Reforming” aimed to respond to these challenges and build a strong foundation with broader perspective and relevant strategies.

MGB-I highlights notable achievements and accomplishments for the past years and until now. These achievements are celebrated with continued progress in pursuit of improved programs and projects for the environment and improvement of the lives of the citizenry.

In the 3-day event, much has been discussed about the issues and concerns for the minerals industry in the Ilocos Region. MGB-I Regional Director Carlos A. Tayag encouraged the participants to be altruistic, independent, build something of lasting benefit and promote the welfare of humanity. Further, he emphasized to promote environmental protection, community empowerment, social acceptability. “We achieve this if we re-invent, perform and reform and be united towards change for the better”, he added.

Meanwhile, DENR-I Regional Executive Director Carlito Tuballa also graced the said event and lauded the MGB for such efforts for the attainment of sustainable development in the mining industry. Ilocos Norte PENR Officer Victor Dabalos welcomed the participants in the Province of Ilocos Norte and expressed his anticipation in the activities prepared for the summit.

Direct Impact/Report Requirements, Tenement Applications, Community Empowerment and EPEP Commitments were discussed after the opening program. Moreover, updates and information from the Integrated Mining Information and Education (I-MINE) were also presented.

Paper presentations were highlighted on the succeeding days. These involve aspects of the minerals industry from the different stakeholders who participated in the summit. Moreover, the discussions revolved on Responsible Mining where the promotion of the awareness on such was intensified summit. The B.O.S.S. project was introduced to the participants as well. Department of Public Works and Highways Region 1 also shared the status of the infrastructure projects in the region and how does it affect the minerals industry.

MGB technical personnel also tackled on Minerals Based-MGB Initiated Livelihood Projects, Proposed Scorecard for LGU-issued permits and PMRB Policies, Issues and Concerns.

Mine Management Division Chief Engr. Renato Rimando moderated a forum for the issues and concerns of the participants.

Media coverages such as TV and radio were conducted as well in the promotion of Responsible Mining through the Mining Summit.

The participants also enjoyed an educational tour in the tourist and historical spots in Ilocos Norte. ###
