Aligned with the theme, "Empowering and Capacitating out Stakeholders towards Environmental Sustainability in the Mining Industry" MGB Regional Director Carlos Tayag challenged the participants to step up their commitment and implement environmental protection programs and social development initiatives that would ensure progress including in the communities. Moreover, he added that MGB-1 supports the DENR Secretary in ensuring sustainable development in mining. This involves rehabilitation of mined-out areas and strict promotion of it. The bureau has mentioned its plans to augment mining’s contribution to the country’s revenue and job generation for the surrounding communities.
While EMB Regional Director Maria Dorica Naz-Hipe emphasized the strict implementation of DENR policies and encouraged everyone to be responsible in their operations and be compliant on the regulations.
A good amount of information and updates were shared by the speakers. These included MRFC updates and highlights presented by the OIC Chief of the Mine Safety, Environment and Social Development Division Engr. John Ymson. His presentation tackled the background of the MRFCs and MMTs created in Region 1, highlights and updates of operations and plans and programs. A presentation was also discussed by the Chief of Mine Environment Management Section Engr. Ruben Soriano. He shared the MGB Policy Updates on Mine Environmental Management such as the environmental measures, temporary revegetation plan, environmental parameters and so forth. Engr. Ian Daquipil discussed on the Revised CMR and CMVR 2019. Engr. Roque Palmes from the Omnico Natural Resources Inc. also presented on the Utilization of Silt as ingredient to concrete hollow blocks at Omnico Plant in Barangay 18, San Isidro, Sarrat, Ilocos Norte.
On the 2nd day of the summit, a series of presentations were done. It was started with the Assessment of Different Embankment Methods in Mitigating River Bank Soil Erosion Along Bued River in Brgy. Binday, San Fabian, Pangasinan by Engr. Angelica D. De Vera. Following that, the Chief, of the Ambient Monitoring and Technical Services of EMB-1 Engr. Remedios A. Jimenez discussed the Ambient Air, Water, and Noise Sampling Protocols. While Engr. Rommilyn V. Torio of the Provincial Government of La Union presented on the Establishment and Operationalization of MRFC-LGU in the Province of La Union. And lastly, the OIC, Chemicals and Hazardous Waste Section Engr. Maureen S. Malazo shared her knowledge on Solid and Hazardous Waste Management.
After the presentations, a forum was opened for questions, issues and concerns.
