MICC conducts review in quarry companies in Region 1

In pursuant to Section 3 of Executive Order (EO) No. 79, the Mining Industry Coordinating Council (MICC) issued Resolution No. 6 on February 9, 2017, directing the conduct of a multi stakeholder review on the performance of existing mining operations. The Department of Finance (DOF) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), on behalf the MICC have entered into an agreement with the Department of the Philippines (DAP) to conduct a review of the performance of existing mine operations.

In view of the Memorandum dated February 21, 2022, by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB)- Central Office instructing all MGB- Regional Offices concerned to render assistance to the Technical Review Team (TRT) members, including coordination with the mining companies, local government units/ officials, National Commission on Indigenous People and other government agencies, and to provide assistance as may be requested by the MICC relative to the said undertaking, MGB Region 1 technical personnel (Engr. John Ymson-Chief, MSESDD, Engr. Nandry Clae Lagman-Section Chief, MTSS-MMD) joined the MICC team during the review of the performance of existing quarry operations in region 1 on April 26-29, 2022.

The review is intended to be an objective, fact-finding, and science-based process to identify interventions that would effectively address existing mining issues and concerns and to recommend policy measures that will further improve the management and regulation to ensure the development of a more sustainable and responsible mining sector. The review coved the performance of the mining companies in the economic, social, environmental, technical, and legal aspects.

The MICC is co-chaired by the Secretaries of Finance (DOF) and of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and comprises 24 agencies.

Two reviews have been conducted by the MICC covering 26 mining companies that were issued closure and suspension orders by the DENR and the remaining 18 operating large-scale mining operations. The third phase of the review included the following quarry companies in region 1:
