MGB 1 caps off Provincial Mining Summit in La Union and Pangasinan 

In line with the goal of informing, educating and communicating its benefits to the economy of the nation and to call for action towards #MineResponsibility, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region 1 is conducted the first ever Provincial Mining Summit in the Province of La Union and Pangasinan with the theme “Responsible Mining Industry: Catalyst to National Economic Recovery” which aims to highlight notable achievements and accomplishments of the Minerals Industry in La Union and Pangasinan for the past years and until now.

 These achievements are celebrated with continued progress in pursuit of improved programs and projects for the environment and improvement of the lives of the citizenry.


Various topics were discussed by experts and technical personnel in public and private organizations. These included the Best Practices on Mineral Resources Management showcasing successes in maintaining a responsible mining industry in La Union and Pangasinan; Positive and not so positive experiences hosting several sand and gravel resource extractive projects showcasing its contribution to the economy of the municipalities in La Union and Pangasinan; Upper and Lower Bued River Training Project; MGB policy updates such as Recent DENR Tenement Policies, Status of SHES compliances, Relevance of Geosciences on Economic Activities, Geologic Assessment of the Pebble Deposits in Luna;  Provisions on granting Environmental Compliance Certificate and the status of compliance of Sand and Gravel operations in La Union and Pangasinan; Promotion of the minerals industry through strategic information, education, and communication with concerned stakeholders; Best Practices on safety and health, environmental protection, and community development of Mining companies in La Union and Pangasinan; Offshore Mining, its overview, environmental and economic impact; and Status of Enhanced National Greening Program in Pangasinan. 

MGB OIC,Assistant Director Engr. Juancho Pablo S. Calvez graced the summit in Pangasinan as keynote speaker while Supervising Environmental Management Specialist Ms. Annalyn Rosario-Valdez represented La Union Governor Raphaelle Veronica Ortega as keynote speaker. DENR 1 Regional Executive Director Atty. Crizaldy Barcelo and EMB 1 Regional Director Maria Dorica Naz Hipe also delivered their inspirational messages. Alaminos City Mayor Arth Bryan Celeste and La Union Provincial Executive Assistant IV Justo Orros III welcomed the participants in respective legs.

In his message, MGB 1 Regional Director Socrates Gaerlan stated that the bureau have earnestly worked towards Sustainable Mining especially in the Ilocos region. MGB 1 have been always committed to the promotion of sustainable mineral development and recognizes partnership with stakeholders in the formulation of policy framework for the ecological utilization of the country’s mineral resources.
