MGB 1 continues with VRA IEC and distribution of Risk Exposure Maps in Ilocos Sur
SAN ESTEBAN, Ilocos Sur – The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region 1 continues with its series of Training-Workshop on Understanding Risk Exposure Maps with the municipality of San Esteban last August 19, 2022 at the Municipal Hall of San Esteban, Ilocos Sur. The said activity followed health and safety protocols such as checking of temperature, wearing of facemasks, physical distancing and proper hand sanitation.
Geosciences Division Chief Ms. Vilma A. Vecino mentioned in her message that the Vulnerability Risk Assessment (VRA) is essential to LGUs as it could provide technical support and information in updating their Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) and disaster preparedness and management. Moreover, she added that barangay-based DRRM with the use of MGB threat advisories as guide in contingency planning should be established and implemented.
The said training is a part of the Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign for the Vulnerability Risk Assessment (VRA). The population, built-up areas and road networks are the considered elements at risk during the assessment. Thus risk exposure maps for these elements were done to properly identify which barangays have the most number of people with potential of being affected by specific geohazards and to identify the proper locations and the most appropriate alternate traffic routes and pre-positioning areas for recovery and relief operations.
The project now seeks the optimized use of the 1:10,000 scale detailed flood and landslide maps for local government units in respective land-use and contingency planning by evaluating the existing vulnerability conditions within their areas.
Geosciences Division Chief Vilma A. Vecino and geologists Ivy May Graycochea, Michael Andre Araojo, Fatima Tyreza Juan and Vince Joven Nazario discussed on Understanding Geologic Hazards such as Rain-Induced Landslides and Flood Hazards, Presentation on the Updated Geohazard Susceptibility Map, Introduction to VRA, VRA Methodology, Role of Men and Women during a Disaster and Presentation on the Risk Exposure Maps.
MGB 1 turned over the Risk Exposure Maps to San Esteban LGU as well as IEC kits.
